West Bengal Secondary class curriculum to add a chapter on snakes
From the next academic year, the government of West Bengal has decided to add a chapter on snakes in the secondary school curriculum. The main aim is to educate the children about different types of snakes and what one should do at the sight of a reptile. The new chapter will also sensitize the students about the role of the reptiles in protecting biodiversity.The chapter will include the details on venomous and non-venomous snakes, their Latin and common names and how to reach if one saw a snake in the neighborhood. The new chapter will be introduced in the Life Science subject of class 8, told Chairman of Syllabus Committee Abhik Majumder.“A draft of the curriculum has been prepared with the guidance of doctors from state-run R G Kar Medical College and Hospital,” said the chairman.“We think introducing a chapter on snakes will serve the purpose of educating students and their parents about the different types of snakes, the role of snakes in protecting our biodiversity, and preventive measures to stop the killing of the reptiles, including venomous ones,” Majumder said.“The board always wants to create awareness among students about the conservation of rich bio-diversity and environment issues,” West Bengal Board of Secondary Education president Kalyanmoy Ganguly said.“The syllabus committee’s decision to introduce a chapter on snakes is a step in that direction,” Ganguly added.
