UGC urges Odisha state to take strict anti-ragging measures

University Grants Commission (UGC) has urged the chief secretary and higher education secretary of Odisha state to take necessary measures to implement anti-ragging measures in the colleges and universities of the state.UGC has framed ‘UGC Regulations on curbing the menace of ragging in higher educational institutions, 2009’ to stop ragging in the colleges. All colleges and universities must follow the guidelines. Besides this, UGC has also set up nation-wide toll-free anti-ragging helpline 1800-180-5522. Students in stress due to ragging can call on this number.“In spite of all the measures, we are yet to completely eliminate the menace of ragging. This is adversely affecting the higher education system of the country. I, therefore, request you to take strong measures to implement the Anti Ragging Regulations in your state and take stringent action against those flouting the guidelines,” said UGC secretary Rajnish Jain in the letter.Jain requested the state government to take strict measures for controlling the ragging and make sure that institutes in the state are ragging free.
