JNU students protest against massive fee hike

Students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) have staged a protest against the administration of the JNU for anti-student policies. Students are protesting against the administration for the hike in the hostel fee.JNU has hiked the hostel fee by 400 percent. “Students wanted to march towards the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), where Vice President Venkaiah Naidu is addressing convocation, but the gates have been barricaded,” reported news agency PTI. "The fee hike will affect an overwhelming number of students. It denies those from the deprived sections to avail education if they cannot pay," JNUSU said in a statement.A new hostel manual was released by the administration in October which introduced new impositions such as five days prior permission for holding meetings, deadline or 'curfew timing' of 11 pm for students to return to hostels are some of the new policies which sparked the protest in the university. The union claims that the Vice-Chancellor Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar has turned down their repeated requests to meet and discuss the issues. On October 28, few students allegedly blocked the ambulance and prevent the doctors from meeting an ailing professor on the campus, following which authorities threatened to take severe action against them.Condemning the incident, JNU Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar posted on Twitter, "The university administration is contemplating on a severe action against some JNU students whose conduct today has been not only unbecoming but dangerous and shameful. This kind of behavior by a section of JNU students is highly condemnable and outrageous."On November 7, the administration had appealed to the students to stop the agitation and focus on the studies.
